NEWBIE: How to network my cable modem with Phoneline to another room without internet sharing?

Hi,

I have a newbie question. Basically my cable modem sits in my living room
(due to cable connection there). My desktop is in another room not having
the cable connection. I want my cable modem connected to my desktop in
another room (only one pc so not really a "network").

Essentially I want to be able to do the following:

Internet ------> Cable Modem (Room1) ----> Phoneline (Room1)
Phoneline (Room2) <------ Desktop (Room2)

Will this work? I read some postings in this newsgroup and went to
www.practicallynetworked.com but could not get this kind of configuration
questions answered. Would really help if someone guided me as to what I
would need for just this kind of a "network extension".

Also, if I do decide to get another desktop and "share" the connection,
would my investment in the above go waste?

Thanks!

How about a Linksys wireless network?

No that won't work. You need to connect your cable modem to your PC with a
Cat5 Ethernet cable, not a phone line. The cables look similar, but they are
very different. You cannot plug a cable modem into a phone jack. If it were
that easy everyone would have a home network. Just run a Cat5 cable from the
cable modem to PC and forget about the phone line thing.

You can buy kits at Office Max and some other stores to use your phone lines in
the house to network PC's, but it costs almost as much as a wireless network.
You will get the best performance by running the CAT-5 line from the modem to
the PC, but if you can't run the wires for some reason, get the wireless network
setup; they work pretty well.

I think you can use the Panasonic KX-HGW200. It has PNA2.0 interface and
Ethernet interface. I think you can use it as a router or bridge.

Internet ------> Cable Modem (Room1) --CAT-5 line---> KX-HGW200 ---->
Phoneline (Room1)--->Phoneline (Room2) <------ Desktop (Room2)

Please see again www.practicallynetworked.com. KX-HGW200 is reviewed
on June 27th.

I tried KX-HGW200. It works fine for Web browsing but If you leave a
TCP
connection idle for about 20 minutes or so then it gets disconnected.
This
is really a bummer if you use it to connect to office for telnet or
ssh or
x-windows connection. I have not tried the wireless port but I have
tried
both the ethernet and phone net connections and they seem to work
except for
the tcp timinig out problem I mentioned above. I find the phone line
network
really useful.I hope panasonic will fix the TCP timing out bug in the
next version of the firmware.

PROS: inexpensive ($100). Has ethernet, phonenet and wireless gateway
functions.
downloadable firmware, nice statistics and configuration
functions.
easy to setup. Works like charm for web browsing.

CONS: TCP connection gets disconnected after idling for about 20
minutes.
So Telnet , ssh and other tcp functions will fail if let idling
for a while

If your phone line cable has 3 pairs of wires in it, it *MAY* work,
provided 2 pairs are free for use. The old 4 wire (black, yellow, green
and red) cable is not suitable.

Hardly a trivial matter in a lot of people's homes.

If using a long cable isn't an option, you may be able to try a wireless
router. You run a network cable (CAT5 as suggested by ITV_Guy) from your
cable modem to your wireless router, and then you should be able to place
your workstations anywhere in your place. The modem and router can be right
next to each other, so connecting them via a cable shouldn't be a problem.
