STB Virge refresh rates

I have a Gateway G6-200xl with the STB Virge 8mb 3D video card. The monitor
it is being used with is the IIyama 9017E. In theory the card can output
at 1280x1024 (24 bit colour) @ 85hz vertical refresh rates, which the
monitor is built to accept. Yet in reality this is prooving to be very
elusive. The drivers shipped with the machine (STB 3D video with STB
vision '95 v1.24) allow one to set these values - but do not output as
specified. The same also applies to the latest S3 Inc Virge/Vx PCI drivers.
Just in case, I double checked with Iiyama to ensure that the monitor inf
file is up to date - and it was.

When I called Gateway tech support, there was much mumblings along the line
of 'but we only test the card with our monitors' etc etc. But eventually
they agreed that the card was not outputting at the rates which it
specifies in the manual. They are unfortunately at a loss, as niether the
Vivitron or Crystalscan Gateway monitors accept this powerful a signal, so
they have no
ready means of testing the video card to ascertain how to configure it.
They have promised to contact STB, and to try and carry out further tests.

In the interim - does anybody have any ideas ? Personally I am sad that
Gateway stopped shipping the excellent Matrox MGA millenium card.....

I'm curious..I've the G6-200 with the STB Virge 8mb. How do you know
you're not getting the refresh rate you've set (unless it's so slow
you get flicker)?
