Tigereye MB, IRQ problem with W95 :-(

I'm trying to free up IRQs on a Tigereye motherboard, the problem is the
PIIIX PCI IDE controller.

If I disable the secondary IDE controller W95 still allocates it IRQ 15.

If I disable PnP bios support and allocate IRQ15 to an ISA device W95
disables both primary & secondary IDE controllers.

Is there any way to disable the secondary IDE without disabling the
primary ? While still using W95 ;-)

The problem seems to be with W95 treating the PCI IDE controller as one
device rather than the primary and secondary controllers individually.

The idea is to keep using an ATAPI CD when the HDs are SCSI - yes I know
a SCSI CD would solve the problem but I don't have one and can't see why
the above should be a problem :-)

Thanks

Andy

This is a "feature" of Win95. I copyied the follow information from
http://www.microsoft.com/kb/articles/q128/9/19.htm titled "Resources for
Disabled Devices Not Freed Up".

[start quote]

Even though you disable a device in your computer's CMOS settings,
Windows 95 enables the device and consumes its resources.
Windows 95 may also reinstall a device that is removed from Device
Manager.

To prevent Windows 95 from activating disabled hardware, you must
disable the hardware in the computer's CMOS settings AND remove it
from the current configuration in Windows 95. This frees the device's
resources for other devices to use. To disable a device in the current
configuration, follow these steps:
1.Click the Start button, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
2.Double-click the System icon.
3.Click the Device Manager tab, then double-click the device you want to
disable.
4.Click the General tab, then click the Original Configuration (Current)
check box to clear it.
5.Click the OK button.
6.Restart Windows 95 when prompted.
7.Disable the device in your computer's CMOS settings.

When you disable a device in Device Manager, you must restart your
computer before you can reassign the device's resources to another
device, even though you are not prompted to restart Windows 95.

[end quote]

Basically you want to follow these instructions and disable the
*secondary* IDE channel in Device Manager AND disable the second IDE
controller in CMOS. There are a couple of other KB articles on this.

Bill
