P5-66: Bios setting adjustment needed for W95 to see an internal modem?

I am selling my P5-66 Gateway system (but wish to keep my Courier V Anything external modem which works OK via the 9pin socket ie COM 1)) and am trying to install an el-cheapo MediaMagic internal 56K modem in a spare ISA slot without success. W95 detects the card on bootup and installs the modem and driver on COM3 yet reports inability to commmunicate with the modem when trying to dial out. I'm aware that true PnP didn't arrive until the P75 pc and that there may be a setting within the BIOS needed to allow this modem to work. I have tried changing the jumpers on the card to allow each COM setting in turn and reinstalled the software to each but without success. I suspect that the problem lies in the IRQ numbers available via the BIOS but at this point I'm a little out of my depth technically! I see there is a adjustable setting in the advanced panel in the BIOS settings currently allowing 3 IRQ's (7,11 and if I remember correctly 4). Does anyone know what I need to change to allow COM 3 to work? The pc has the Batman's revenge M/B with the AF08 version BIOS. thanks

Mik, Ever since the introduction of Plug and Pray, I have had little success installing Plug-and-Play cards in a computer with a non-Plug-and-Play BIOS. I hold little hope for the MediaMagic modem as things stand. You could upgrade the BIOS to PnP if Microfirmware has a BIOS upgrade for your board. But that would be pricey. Your best bet is to install a modem that is either not PnP or one that has both PnP and jumperable settings. Good choices would be a Hayes Accura 56K (no longer made, but solid product) or an Acer 56K ISA modem. Both have jumper settings for use on non-PnP computers or with operating systems that do not provide good (or any) PnP support. ...
