Adding scsi card

Hello,
I would like to add a scsi card to my Gateway 4DX2-66V. I am confused
as to whether it should be a ISA or a VL card. I plan on using this card to
change my CDROM (currently connected via the soundcard) as well as add a Jazi
or Zip Drive. I an running Win95 as well as Win31 with an updated
Microfirmware PnP bios, as well as the new AMD133 chip. Any help choosing the
Brand and type would be greatly appreciated.
	Thanks.
Edwin

Edwin,

You can add either an ISA or a VL SCSI card. The CD-ROM thruput is
low enough that the faster VL won't make much difference for it. The
Jaz drive would certainly be peppier with a VL SCSI card.

I recommend Adaptec's 1542 or BusLogic's 542 for ISA SCSI and
Adaptec's 2840 or BusLogic's 445S for VL SCSI. Adaptec also makes
cheaper ISA bus SCSI cards, but don't bother. Adaptec is the market
leader and the above models are pretty good and BusLogic has always
been excellent for me.

With either one, you need the "kitted" version which includes the
software you need to support non-disk or removable disk devices on a
SCSI host adapter.

Best regards,
Ben Myers

I agree with Ben Myers. I would also recommend the Adaptec 1542. I
installed the 1542CF (ISA version -- the PCI version came out a week
later!!!!) in our P4D-66 a couple of years ago to run a SyQuest 88MB
removable drive and a Conner 4000 tape backup. It was a relatively
simple install and worked the first time. The software is exceedingly
adaptable to devices you want to connect. I could daisy chain 4
additional devices onto this card. Be sure you get the kit with the EZ
SCSI software. The whole package is well worth the price.
