Tom, I have had the same problem on two NT 4.0 Workstations running SP4. Once you try and change the video card, it keeps defaulting back to the 16 color VGA driver. I spent 1.5 hrs on the phone with Microsoft Tech support to no avail. They gave me an open case #, and are going to investigate. On one of the systems, I was going from the onboard video to an ATI Rage II+, and had the exact same symptoms you described. Finally resorted to formating the drive and re-installing (drastic, but it cured the problem <g>). The second system had a Trident AGP card, and I was putting in a Diamond Stealth 2000 Pro (PCI). Once again I had the same problem. I called MS and jumped through the hoops for them ;-), and they finally came up with a sugestion, that I have not tried yet. They suggested doing a paralel installation (preferably on a different partition, but not necessary), installing SP4, setting up the video card (it should work), and then copying over the system hive. However, there is a "minor" <g> problem... if you do this, you will end up reinstalling all your apps, and there are probably other "minor" side effects <g> Anyway, I still have not been able to fix the second machine, and I don't want to do a reinstall so I guess I'm kind of stuck for the moment. If I hear anything, I will post it.
