I had the same problem, very annoying.

When NT comes up stuck in VGA mode, and complains, I switched to 800x600 
and restarted.  On reboot, NT's VGA driver can't support 800x600, and it 
switches to the Viper driver.

Hopefully this will help you, as other factors may have caused it to 
work.
