Of course that's how my AGP question came out, so let me try it again. ] I have a perplexing problem getting a new Diamond Viper 550 AGP (16MB) to be recognized and come up under NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 installed. This is on a Micron Millennia XI desktop with 400MHz Pentium II, 128MB of RAM, Phoenix BIOS 4.0 release 6.0. The AGP itself has BIOS level 1.94C. The symptom is that after following all the instructions, removing all previous drivers, booting it to VGA, changing the display type (either via running X:\START.EXE from the driver CD or via "Have Disk..." from the display applet), all software apparently installing OK, and rebooting, it STILL comes up in 16 color VGA mode and the "Invalid Display Settings" popup appears. Nothing I can change or set or do changes this. NT Diagnostics shows the driver installed, but VGA Save is the active video. I reinstalled the Service Pack and everything else I could think of, to no avail. The BIOS on the Millennia is set up with Plug+play OFF. I am told in some postings that I should reserve an IRQ for the graphics card, but supposedly it likes IRQ15 by itself and the BIOS SETUP interface doesn't offer 15 in the list of IRQ's to reserve under "Peripheral Configuration." This machine has Windows 98 on another partition, and the AGP came up immediately for Win98 and works like a charm in all modes (except I don't get textures in the Descent 3 Demo, but that could just be the demo). Under 98 it takes IRQ 10. Under NT that IRQ goes to the on-board Crystal audio. Has anyone seen any of this and does anyone have any suggestions? I'm about ready to start pounding my forehead, which usually hurts me more than the problem. :) Happy holidays! ------_=_NextPart_000_01BE3397.A330A9CA Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Location: ATT-0-C161A182679FD211BA8700A0C9857BA0 Newsgroups: alt.sys.pc-clone.micron,3dfx.oem.products.diamond,comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video,comp.os.ms-windows.nt.setup.hardware From: Tom Neff <tneff@pobox.com> Subject: NT 4.0 SP4 won't init Viper 550 AGP! Tom, I have had the same problem on two NT 4.0 Workstations running SP4. Once you try and change the video card, it keeps defaulting back to the 16 color VGA driver. I spent 1.5 hrs on the phone with Microsoft Tech support to no avail. They gave me an open case #, and are going to investigate. On one of the systems, I was going from the onboard video to an ATI Rage II+, and had the exact same symptoms you described. Finally resorted to formating the drive and re-installing (drastic, but it cured the problem <g>). The second system had a Trident AGP card, and I was putting in a Diamond Stealth 2000 Pro (PCI). Once again I had the same problem. I called MS and jumped through the hoops for them ;-), and they finally came up with a sugestion, that I have not tried yet. They suggested doing a paralel installation (preferably on a different partition, but not necessary), installing SP4, setting up the video card (it should work), and then copying over the system hive. However, there is a "minor" <g> problem... if you do this, you will end up reinstalling all your apps, and there are probably other "minor" side effects <g> Anyway, I still have not been able to fix the second machine, and I don't want to do a reinstall so I guess I'm kind of stuck for the moment. If I hear anything, I will post it. I've seen this too. My XKU did the same thing when I installed SP4. The AGP went BYE-BYE. I removed SP4, reinstalled SP3 and all is better. SP4 just doesn't support the APG port correctly, I guess. Once you have installed the VGA driver and rebooted, REBOOT again, then install your new driver. I have spent hours cursing MS until I worked this out Regards Steve C New Zealand OR maybe the display.cpl (desk.cpl? can't remember the name) is corrupt. Copy from another NT machine

I've seen similar behavior myself without changing the video driver, but
merely rebooting from my win98 partition to my NT partition. In my case,
I finally figured out that letting the machine reboot itself wasn't good
enough. Hitting the hard reset button or powering on/off seems to be
the only reliable way to get NT to boot with the "right" video driver.
