Continuing MEMORY PRICE WAR

I checked the Venture Memory site now that RAM prices have gone up
and they seem to be lower than others. Are RAM prices coming down
again?

They are at http://www.smac.net/memory/index.html

Has anyone bought from them?

I have not bought from them but I do know that RAM prices will probably not go
down any further. There has been a glut for some time, coinsiding with a fall
in PC sales (by percentage). Now the stocks have been somewhat depleted and
sales will be accelerating all year (till the holidays).

So if you need to buy, buy soon. The prices will probably not go far higher
but they most likely will go no lower.

I checked their prices on a couple of items (non-parity, non-EDO):

	1 X 32 - 70ns (4 meg) $88
	2 X 32 - 70ns (8 meg) $148

Just today we place an order thru ACME Micro-System (in the Bay Area, CA)
with the following prices:

	1 X 32 - 70ns (4 meg) $65
	2 X 32 - 70ns (8 meg) $120

Bottom line: check around before you buy.

Now I must admit that is the cheapest I have seen. The question is it
cheap ram. Also Do they happen to have a web page or phone number.

I probably have no business posting this followup, but there is so
much confusion re memory prices I can not sit still.

I just returned from the site you propose above. Their price page says
it is as of March-8th. On the 8th I was selling new guaranteed
non-parity SIMMs for $13.75 per MB. The price has gone up this week
and I'm currently posted at $16.25 per. According to this site when I
was at $55 for 4MB SIMM on the 8th, they were at $88!!

This simply does not make sense. If you feel they are lower than the
others you mention above, how high are the others?? and who are they?

since Venture's prices are as of 3/8 how can that be an indication
that RAM is coming down again?? it's now the 21st

Venture may be an excellent source for memory, there is no intention
here to say otherwise, but $22 per MB was not competetive on March 8th
any more than it is today!

Hmmmm... I heard just the opposite. Supposedly there is a new manufacturing
technique that has, in part, helped drive the prices down. I have also
heard rumor that the prices will drop even further by the end of the year.
Can anyone once confirm this ?

If future respondents to the thread could remove comp.benchmarks from
the Newsgroup header, that would be really nice. Not sure exactly what
an appropriate group(s) for memory price duscussions might be, but I
suspect that comp.benchmarks is not one of them.

thanks,

Just wanted to chime in that we also currently (3/26) have lower prices to the tune of:
.x36 represents TRUE parity

1x32-70 $60
2x32-70 $120
2x32-60 $125
2x36-70 $140
4x32-70 $240
4x36-70 $285
(Samsung, TI, NEC, Panasonic)

We also have HDD, CPU, MB. Email connect@mcs.com for a complete catalog.

I just checked their web page, and their prices now seem
to be as high if not higher than the new higher prices for new memory
on misc.forsale.computers.memory. Maybe they just hadn't updated their
web page when you checked.

Does anyone know of a good program I can use to check the speed of my

You can't check memory speed with a program. Either the memory works
with the speed setting of your motherboard or it doesn't.

Just wanted to chime in here about memory prices:
All you nay-sayers can now eat some fresh crow! Nyah!
Prices are dropping to more acceptable levels again, and it
appears to be at a much slower rate. Maybe we'll see some stability?

Is this a one-time catalog, or am I going to be put on a twice-daily
mailing list like everywhere else?
I've had to threaten legal action under the Telecom bill more than
once to get rid of some of them. Say what you will about the Telecom
Bill, but it does have some good portions.

Its an exercise program, but a program nonetheless:

10	OPEN THE CASE
20	REMOVE A SIMM
30	LOOK AT THE NUMBERS ON THE CHIPS AFTER THE DASH
40	IF LAST TWO NUMBERS == 10 THEN SIMM == 100ns
50	IF LAST TWO NUMBERS == 80 OR 08 THEN SIMM == 80ns
60	IF LAST TWO NUMBERS == 70 OR 07 THEN SIMM == 70ns
70	IF LAST TWO NUMBERS == 60 OR 06 THEN SIMM == 60ns
80	REPLACE SIMM
90	REPLACE COVER
100	END

Its in pseudo-BASIC.

It's just a one time pricelist. Any time you want one you have to email. No listserv.

The Venture Memory site is at
http://www.smac.net/memory/index.html

The prices are still lower than I can find anywhere. I bought
memory from them and it is NEW memory with warranty.

If this is the best you could find, you didn't look very far. Memory
Exchange beats these prices easily as do most other vendors.

THESE GUYS ARE EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT BUT FROM VENTURE UNLESS YOU LIKE PAYING TOO MUCH!!!!!!!

What really pisses me off, is how some supposedly "unrelated" third
party keeps posting that they are the "cheapest in town". Yea right.
They make ComputerLand look cheap.

Even if they were competitive I would avoid any company that uses this
sort of deceptive advertising.

Every time I see one of their "agents" post I will be happy to
reply!!!

BTW Try Fry's electronics for cheap prices from a LARGE and REPUTABLE
company. They are all over California and have a few stores in San
jose and PaloAlto (amazing places if you have never seen one!)
Yes they mail order (everything!) and take credit cards with no
surcharge

Ron

Why do you all continue to give out Fry's prices to the rest of the
USA? They don't ship mail order and they are located in CA only as
far as I know.
