BIOS setup on a Packard Bell PC???

Hi there,
I am installing a CD-RW on a Packard Bell PC. I need to access the BIOS
to force the CD-RW to the Secondary Slave, but can't get into the BIOS.

Have tried Del, Ctrl+Alt+Ins, Ctrl+Alt+Esc Ctrl+Alt+F2 etc but no luck.

I don't want people telling me I shouldn't access the BIOS, or I
shouldn't need to do it. The fact is I do want to enter the BIOS setup
and need to know how to do it.

I have never seen any true answers to this question, people always talk
around it, but never actually answer the question, so.... I throw out
the challenge :o)

Happy New Year to you all...
Thanks
Andrew

I do not have your model here
Most computers on boot say what key to hit to enter setup at bottom of
screen

On most systems its either DEL or F2, however we will need to know what
system you have and if possible what make of BIOS is used by your system eg
award, phoenix etc etc. to give a correct response.

Hi,

Happy new year 2001.

Try simply F1 or F2. Maybe if your PC is recent, press ESC then F1 or F2 or
Del

Hope this will help.

Thanks Simon

It is a PB 333, about 18 mths old. There is no onscreen dialogue on
bootup, only the Packard Bell logo - which I can't disable either. I
don't even see the memory test!! There is also a password in the BIOS
which I must enter on every boot, it was set that way when I got the PC.
I would like to diable that too.

The Del key is what gets me into my BIOS on a PB 333. Install Tweakui
on the computer and then in one of the tabs there is an option to
diable splash screen.

F2 to remove BOOT logo and view mem test etc
DEL (normally to enter BIOS)

Alot depends on BIOS manufacturer but I would suspect its a PHOENIX BIOS
which is now AWARD.

Tweakui only effects Windows. What you are reffering to is the Windows
Splash screen.
The BOOT logo can only be disabled from within the BIOS setup or by flashing
the BIOS with a non-PB bios.

I have also installed a CD-RW, and it has never properly worked. I never

Was just stating how it worked on my PB 333. Twekui got rid of
everything on bootup so that I can view the whole boot up process.

Hi Andrew,

Since you know the bios is password protected and you don't know the
password, the only way around this is to reset the CMOS. This will wipe the
Bios clean and reset it to it's defaults.

My own machine originally had a K6-2 333 MHz processor (now K6-2 550 MHz) on
a 950 motherboard, i.e. 955 Multimedia system.
Your machine is probably similiar, with an Award Bios FR510 bios or similiar
bios.

WARNING - YOU WILL LOSE ANY CUSTOMIZED BIOS SETTINGS YOU HAVE BY DOING THIS.

It is likely a two step process on your machine:

a. Set the CMOS jumper on the motherboard in the position to clear the CMOS

OR

b. If a jumper does not exist, remove the coin battery on the motherboard
for at least 30 seconds and then reinsert the battery. Restart the machine
and hold the F2 key. The bios should appear momentairly and you can edit
it.

c. If step a. above is done, power up the machine and shut it off when
Windows begins to load. Reset the jumper to it's previous position. Then
reboot the machine and hold the F2 key. The bios should appear momentairly
and you can edit it.

ONCE YOUR IN THE BIOS...use your arrow keys or page up/down keys to
highlight the STANDARD CMOS SETUP and set your drives there. I'd recommend
the "auto setup" option for each IDE master and slave you're using (and the
"none option" for the others) unless there is a need to set it up
individually.

Good Luck!

Chris McGilton

When the machine starts to boot up, press F2. That should get you into the
bios.

F2? DeL? Huh?

All of my PB's use F1 to access to BIOS. If you can't do that, press a key
when you turn on the power, it'll detect a stuck keyboard and prompt you
this:

Stuck Keyboard Detected
<F1> to access setup <ESC> to boot

Thats still windows. Your computer does what BIOS says until it looks for
an operating system. At that point the changes you made with tweakui will
be in effect. The splash screen you're refering to is the "starting windows
95" screen, the logo Andrew is talking about is one of the first things on
the screen when he turns on.

And I dont see how forcing the CD drive to sec slave in bios will help
myself . . . Check your other drive's status (pri slave etc) But I still
know you need to get in there =) Try forcing an error - unplug the keyboard
or hold down a key.

You mentioned the Award FR510 BIOS. Have you updated your BIOS also? I
have asked about this several times here. I got an updated BIOS chip
from unicore.com a while back that was supposed to be an updated one.
Actually I got 3 of them. None would get past the part of detecting my
primary IDE. Then I got a message from pbsupport.alorica.com saying
thee is no BIOS update. any info on this BIOS chip would be
appreciated. Thank you.

Andrew,
Here are the BIOS setup access keys PB has used. One of these will work
providing that all the keys on your keyboard are functioning properly.

DEL, ESC, F1, F2, CTRL+ALT+S, & CTRL+ALT+INS.

                            Jeff

Hello

This web site might help!!

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/8774/

"Ray's Packard Bell Web Site"

Was looking at it the other day (about the Power up adaptor). I`m sure
it has what you need.

Andrew - I don't think this is the proper forum for technical questions,
but here is the most complete list of CMOS access keys I've ever found -
good luck:

Accessing CMOS:

Manufacturer Access Methods
----------------------------------
AMI Del on bootup
                    Ctrl+S

AST Ctrl+Alt+Esc

Award F1 or F2 on Bootup
                    Del on Bootup
                    Ctrl+Alt+Enter

Compaq F10 on Bootup

Phoenix F2
                    Ctrl+Alt+Esc
                    Ctrl+Alt+R
                    Ctrl+Alt+Ins
                    Ctrl+Alt+Q
                    Ctrl+Alt+F1
                    Ctrl+Alt++
                    Ctrl+Alt+-

IBM PS1 &

Value Point Ctrl+Alt+I

If none of the methods listed above work, it may be possible to force the
system to access the BIOS by creating an error condition. To create an
error condition that may allow access to the BIOS try the following:

1. Hold down the Space Bar to force a keyboard error during the boot.
2. Disconnect the Hard Drive.
3. Disconnect the Floppy Drive.

Other Systems
-------------
Unless the POST message displays the BIOS access method or it is written
in
the documentation; Qualtel, DTK, Kaypro, AST, IBM, NEC, Compaq, NCR, and
other older systems will either have a POST message or include a
setup/diagnostics disk that includes a BIOS configuration procedure.

Check the system manual

Look at your as-supplied CDROMS

Look for a DIR named BOOKS and or files named *.mvb

THOSE are the system manuals and will tell U how to get in.

Must also install mviewer.exe off CDROM to be able to read them

GOOD LUck

BTW I also remember a DEBUG routine which will help, but have to find
the documentation

Hi Peter,
I am not sure if you need to access the bios to make your CD-RW work
properly, but I had to in order to recognise the drive at all. The "Alt
+ Ctl + S" was the one that worked for me.

Perhaps you could try using different software to burn and control your
CD-RW, or return it as it may be faulty.

To all who replied to my question, thankyou, you have been very helpful.

Regards
Andrew
