Hi! I need to know if all pb680 motherboards support MMX(are there versions with and without support for it?). I have one with a 166 mhz Pentium (not MMX) processor, and I want to upgrade it. Up to what speed does this board support? Thanks for any help. Pablo MD. pablomd@netexpress.cl

AFAIK the voltage regulator that supports the dual voltage that MMX needs is required on the MO BO. There are some who claim to be running MMX without the regulator, but I question whether they are actually getting MMX performance. Not all 680's have it. Mine doesn't. Without a powerleap adapter, or some such, You can only go to 200 without mmx, which is what I did. Problem: non-mmx chips are now very difficult to find and very expensive if you do. I also heard that a Winchip will work. the voltage regulator boards are really called a PB685. I also believe a 683 has the regulator. if yours has it, it will be a metal shielded unit next to the CPU socket. You can als look for the setting silk screened onto the board should 2 settings, VRE & something else. Concept Manufacturing makes an $84 Pentium 233MMX Overdrive for non-MMX Pentium 75+ machines called a "SpeedChip 233". It has a fixed 3.5 multiplier, so you only need to ensure that your motherboard is jumper-set to a 66Mhz bus speed to use it. http://conceptmfg.com/ This is a real Pentium proc, so a 3rd party BIOS upgrade isn't needed like other AMD-related upgrade options. - BBJB ____________________________ In article <newscache$ywsehf$evl$1@news.netline.cl>, "Pablo MD" <pablomd@netexpress.cl> wrote: > Hi! > I need to know if all pb680 motherboards support MMX(are there versions with > and without support for it?). I purchased a voltage unit from them and it didn't even fit on the CPU. So I had to return it. I figure the powerleap for $69.00 and a Intel P233MMX for $33.00 your total is = 102.00 and you have the ability to use a different CPU if you ever want to. Or atleast adjust the jumpers. And that's only an $18.00 difference. That's just my opinion. There are also earlier versions that do not, usually fitted with 133-200Mhz Pentium Classics when they were high end processors. Dead giveaway in this case is the S3 video chipset. I know for almost certain the 682 (S3 Trio64), 683 (S3 Virge 325) and 685 supported MMX. I not sure about earlier sub-models/revisions. Regards John Roberts
