Upgrading a 486 DX

A quick question to all you knowledgeble zeos users.
I'm soon going to "inherit" an older zeos 486 33 DX which I want to use
in some capacity to supplement my current midi/music set up. The basic midi
functions are being handled very well by my vintage atari (please no
LOL's etc. I'm using the latest version of Cubase and all is working
flawlessly.) and I hate redundancies. To be honest, in the midi arena,
the zeos will not outperform my mega--at least not without a substantial
outlay of cash for new programs, interfaces etc.
What I would like to do is use the zeos for HD recording applications,
which I understand work much better on faster processors (100 Mhz+). Is
it feasable (practically and economically) to upgrade this machine to 5-
or 686 or a pentium? If so, what would be involved? My father (the
current owner) claims it isn't practical or possible and that it would be
cheaper to just buy a new system. what will I need--a new chip, a new
mother board?
If this helps at all, his concern is that the machine uses ISA busses vs
PCI busses.
 Any insights?

Color me helpless...I'm used to plug and play apple/atari/macintosh systems.
