For those of you who are interested in running Unixware on a Zeos machine, here is my experience: I purchased a Pantera Pentium 75Mhz with 24MB RAM, 1GB SCSI HD, 4x CD-ROM, Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM PCI video, and the SCSI chip from ZEOS. Here's what I found out: The CD-ROM is an IDE CD-ROM drive made by ATAPI and as far as I know, it doesn't work with Unixware. The SCSI chip that I got was an AMD 79C974 which is not supported by Uniware either (there are Linux drivers - I hear). The Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM is very fast, but the driver is about a week away for Unixware X windows. I had to purchase an Adaptec 2940 (PCI) to get Unixware to run, plus a SCSI CD-ROM (NEC). When I got these devices, Unixware installed and runs fine, except for the fact that it is much too fast! :) I also purchase the ZYNX Ethernet board which is also a PCI card. The device has excelent Unixware support! Plus, it is noticably faster than normal ISA ethernet cards!! Overall, as long as you don't plan on using their SCSI chip or their CD-ROM, the machine is excelent! It has got to be the fastest PC I've ever used, if not the fastest UNIX box I've touched... -- Tom Cross Voice: 612-253-1020 FAX: 612-253-6956 System Administrator E-mail: tomc@kendeco.com Kendeco Industrial Supply Info: info@kendeco.com

It does, however, work with Linux (recent kernels, anyway). > The SCSI chip that I got was an AMD 79C974 which is not supported by > Uniware either (there are Linux drivers - I hear). I'm not aware of a Linux driver for this chip. That's why I didn't get it; I also went out and bought a 2940. The Linux driver for the 2940 is in alpha, but it works for me. > The Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM is very fast, but the driver is about a > week away for Unixware X windows. Unixware doesn't use XFree86? The Stealth 64 VRAM, at least, is well supported by XFree86. Jason

I can't find that stupid manual now to take out my revenge. :( -- Tom Cross Voice: 612-253-1020 FAX: 612-253-6956 System Administrator E-mail: tomc@kendeco.com Kendeco Industrial Supply Info: info@kendeco.com v2.1: GCSd>--H-s:+g-p0aua-w+v-(+)C++UV++++$p+L+(++)3E---N++K-W-- !MV-po+Y+t++5j-R(+)G?tv+(++)b+!DBe++u+h----f+r+++!ny++++(*)

I couldn't find a copyright notice, a tech-support number, or anything which would indicate who makes the damned drive. I knew it was Mitsumi, but wanted to contact them re: driver updates at one point, and couldn't. ~~~Steve -- /************************************************* * *Steven Abrams abrams@cs.columbia.edu * **************************************************/ INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY = Interactive Network For Organizing, Retrieving, Manipulating, Accessing, and Transferring Information On National Systems, Unleashing Practically Every Rebellious Human Intelligence, Gratifying Hackers, Wiseacres, And Yahoos. -- Kevin Kwaku.

It's probably on glossy paper anyway. Won't stick.

This is very typical, and intentional: the manual is printed so it can be
used by an OEM to add to a complete system which happens to contain that
drive, without telling anyone who made the drive. It's the kind of thing
that keeps "experts" in business (i.e. people who recognise the particular
entrails on the PCB).
