         -------URGENT : PLEASE INFORM LIKELY APPLICANTS -------

A research fellow to work on a Poplog+X-based User Interface Design
Environment project will very soon be required to replace someone who
has been tempted to a job in Spain!

The remaining time on the project is about two and a quarter years.

The UIDE (User Interface Design Environment) project is a collaborative
project between Sussex University, Integral Solutions Ltd and BMT Ltd.
It is funded by SERC and the Information Engineering Directorate, and
Phil Husbands and Aaron Sloman are the Sussex grant holders.

The project is concerned with designing tools (based on Poplog and the X
window system) to enable people interactively to design, extend, or
modify user interfaces, including both interfaces that run within
Poplog, and interfaces that can be run independently. The latter
requires the UIDE to generate C code and X specification files that can
be linked into a non-Poplog program. The main form of interface design
is graphical, but there should also be a textual specification mechanism
as well.

The "ideal" candidate should

    * be familiar with X,
    * have experience of user interface design and the HCI literature,
    * have experience of programming in C
    * have experience of programming in Pop-11 (Pop-11 is a Lisp-like
        language with a Pascal-like syntax, forming the core of the
        Poplog multi-language development environment.)
    * be familiar with object-oriented design
    * be able to help with local project management, including liaison
        with the commercial collaborators.
    * be able to write well (we have to produce project reports,
        research reports, etc.)
    * be available not long after the end of April

Candidates with non-empty subsets of these qualifications will be
considered!
