Hello,

Could someone provide some wisdom/suggestion in explaining this error I see
when installing APACHE 1.3.22 on my Sun Blade 100 (running Solaris 8)?

After installation, when I try to run "/usr/bin/localapachectl start",
nothing happens, except I see the following error in Apache's error log:

[Sun Dec 16 21:15:12 2001] [alert] httpd: Could not determine the server's
fully qualified domain name, using 192.168.0.2 for ServerN

[Sun Dec 16 21:15:13 2001] [alert] Child 19710 returned a Fatal error...
Apache is exiting!

I am unable to glean any more information from it. Any help would be
appreciated. Please post to the group.

Thanks!

You don't have your fully qualified name in the host file and you are
using the default nobody/nobody for the uid and gid in the httpd.conf
file. You should create a user and a group with no rights like
uid=httpd and gid=www to run the daemon. You must edit your httpd.conf
and set up your servername. There's lots of stuff to tweak in there,
check www.apache.org for more details. Good luck.

In the Apache httpd.conf file, add your servers FQDN to the
'ServerName' directive, then restart Apache.
