Hi [ THIS IS URGENT I NEED HELP FAST ....... ] I recently got hold of a new pc with Windows 98 on it. I just finished updating the critical files on it today from the update Microsoft web site. I kept on getting freezes before and after my updates when using Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 and Outlook Express and had Getright running as well as System Scheduler, Creative SB PCI64's mixer as well as Norton Anti-virus OEM version 5.0. So I decided to run System File Checker SFC and see if any files were corrupted. The result was that maybe my user.exe file was corrupted and was told if I want to restore from setup files or installation disks. I said yes and pointed to my cab files on my harddrive - not knowing where or which cab file to extract from ? SFC app finished scanning after this and came up with need to restart computer - which I did. The Result: The boot up screen came up and everything went fine up until scanning boot files etc and then windows menu came up giving me a choice or options such as 1. Normal Boot 2. 3. Command Prompt only etc -- I selected Safe mode and the scan disk ran. When finished the menu came up showing the cpu type speed and ram and ports etc and started as if I just booted up. Then it went back to the menu showing the options again. I selected Safe mode again The same thing occurs again. I did this a couple of times and the same thing. I turned off my computer and turned it on again and the same. This time I got the following message "An Exception has occurred at 0028:C29202BB in VxD ---. Called from 0028:C1835698 in VxD --- . " Then it has the usual may continue by pressing any key or Ctrl -Alt - Del - but when I press any key or Ctrl -Alt -Del nothing happens. I tried reinstalling Win 98 from the cab files in my hard drive at C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\ But the setup program says that my version of Win 98 can not be installed and I need Win 98 upgrade cd-rom ? I have the full version Win 98 CD-ROM OEM from my retailer ... My hardrive - IBM 10GB hdd is partitioned as C:\ - 7.5 GB and D:\ 2.5 GB Win 98 is installed on C:\ I have Partition magic 4 installed on C:\ I have the Win 98 Startup / boot disk that came with the CD-ROM and I also have a Zip drive if this comes in handy. Would reinstalling Win 98 work in letting me boot and start my computer? Would reinstalling Win 98 remove my apps and data on C:\ and D:\ ? Would reinstalling Win 98 files overwrite newer files from my updates that I installed today before this problem - i.e. Virtual Java Machine and Y2K update as well as the critical file updater etc and DirectX 6.1. Can anyone help me boot up and let Win 98 run normally again ? Without reformatting or deleting my data files, programs and partitions ? This is urgent since I need to access book-keeping and account files on my other computer and other things.
