Ya know, there seems to be a lot of misconceptions, or just confusion, about Windows 95/98 and TCP/IP protocols or stacks. I agree using programs like the new 98-SE with ICS via NAT, you must have two network devices installed on your computer. One for your internet connection, and one for your home network. However, if you utilize programs which provide PROXY services, like Wingate or Winproxy, you only need to have one network device for Cable Modem users. Here is another solution instead of utilizing two NIC cards in a machine eating up all those valuable IRQ resources and PCI/ISA slots. With a Proxy Server like WINGATE running for Cable Modem and DSL users, you can, under Win95/98, add multiple TCP/IP protocols (or stacks) to the NIC adapters installed on the machine. I have been able to assign, and bind, up to 4 IP addresses to a single NIC installed in Win95 and up to 6 IP's on Win98 machines. This assumes you don't have any other network adapters, like DUN or VPN, installed. Since Microsoft has limited the total number of TCP/IP protocols to 4 under Win95 and 6 under Win98, you simply go to Network Properties and ADD PROTOCOL, select MICROSOFT and TCP/IP and it will load an "additional" TCP/IP protocol to each installed network adapter (remember if you have stuff like DUN or VPN adapters loaded, you are still limited to a total number of TCP/IP protocols between all the installed adapters Win95=4, Win98=6). Then you simply assign the proper IP addresses to each TCP/IP protocol on your NIC. One for your internet connection 24.x.x.x(or simply use @HOMES DHCP services), and assign the other TCP/IP NIC protocol for your private network 192.0.0.1/255.255.255.0. Works for me!
