   I've had the same problem, but it only occurred in a random fashion - once
every week and sometimes two or three bootups in a row..  I would then have to
come up in safe mode, then close down from safe mode.  Then when I would come
backup successfully  some of my preferences that I used in MY Computer windows
were gone  and my shortcuts were on top of each other.
  My theory was that the read head on the hard drive was having difficulty
reading the vmm32.vxd file.  After a successful bootup I copied the vmm32.vxd
file to a temporary folder.  Then I went back to the vmm32.vxd in the
c:\windows\system folder and renamed it vmm32.old.  Then I copied the vmm32.vxd
file back to the c:\windows\system from the temporay folder. This caused the
vmm.vxd file to be located a different spot on the hard drive.
   It appears to have solved the problem for me or perhaps it just went away by
coincidence. If you use this technique be careful.
