I also need to keep winsock 1 on my W98, for a different reason. One trial
program I installed thrashed my winsock config during uninstall. For days I
tried to fix it to no avail. I could not network with either my network card
nor dialup. If I ran winipcfg I got an error that it could not read my network
settings.

Then someone told me about a directory that windows uses to basicaly put the
winsock 2 uninstall files. It is windows\ws2bakup. In there you need to run in
DOS the ws2bakup and then in windows the "delw2reg.exe addafvxs" command.

Everytime I upgrade my network cards drivers it askes for the W98 CDROM to load
files. My network is then trashed again. I need to run the above two programs
to fix it.

I am waiting for the next winsock upgrade in the hopes that it will fix my
winsock setup once and for all.
