Win98SE, WP 9W Family Pack 2:

I don't know the version of WordPad but it's copywrite 1981-1998.
System resources 50%, available RAM(?) 400Meg.

I don't know why it _suddenly_ won't read documents but it shows a page fault MSWRD832.CNV, which is version 981.20800.

With Vernon Buerg's old List.com I can view the text with no problem, but of course there's no formatting and embedded images are lost. I try to open it with WordPerfect 9.0W and NOTHING is visable, and no there's no warning. I have no other modern word processor. I'd use Open Office but I have to shut the rest of the world down as System Resources drop to about 30%. ;-(

Whew... Is that enough for some of you gurus to suggest what's wrong?

Thanks,
Don

30% SYSTEM resources is never a problem. You need to drop below 10% before
you encounter any resource-related problems.

If the problem is WordPad (it's not clear from your post), uninstall then
re-install it. You can do this via Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup. It
should be listed under Accessories. If WordPerfect is the problem, uninstall
then re-install it instead. Or do both.

If the problem persists, run SFC to check all your system files are up to
date.

I kinda blew that initial message. WordPad works fine except on some new
*.DOC files I've been getting in e-mail. Word Pad opens then displays
the Page Default message.

I don't find WordPad listed in Add/Remove or with RegCleaner. I've looked
on the I'Net for a d/l but didn't find one. I don't have an original Win
CD, it's an HP computer and only the Recovery CD is available, there's no
WordPad on it.

What a PITA!

Thanks, XMan...

It sounds more likely the *.DOC files you've been receiving are corrupt in
some way. DOC files are more closely associated with Microsoft Word (part of
the Microsoft Office suite of programs) than WordPad, and could contain
macros (or worse, macro viruses). Ask whoever sent them to convert them to
RTF (Rich Text Format) which WordPad can handle natively. Converting them to
HTML is another option, but if the formatting is important, PDF might be a
better option.
