As the Canadia justice system adopts more and more of the trappings of the U.S. justice system (though Canada has pioneered the use of blanket media censorship), I expect the outcome will be as follows: * For the crime of passing on "The Washington Post"'s account, Gordon Domm will spend 5 years in prison. * For the (alleged) crime of abducting, torturing, murdering, and the devouring <CENSORED UPON ENTERING KANADA>, Paul Teale will be found NOT GUILTY by reason of too much publicity. Paul Teale will then sell his story to Hollywood, with Tanya Harding playing the role of Karla. Karla will be busy doing the talk show circuit, explaining to Oprah, Phil, Sally, and Yolanda how her childhood forced her into cannibalism. Don't you just love the spread of American culture? This whole circus would've ended had Karla and Paul simply had a suitably fast trial, in which the evidence was presented, the testimony heard, and a verdict rendered. Then a quick execution of sentence. (I'm a libertarian, by the way. Most so-called crimes are not crimes. But the acts that _are_ crimes can and should be dealt with quickly and harshly. There's no reason a murder trial should take two years of hemming and hawing and media blackouts....) --Tim May -- ..........................................................................
