Ah, so since Wired *did* go in with their eyes open, the question is ...
why? It certainly wasn't ideological abandon - there are many more targets
of opportunity if one wants to pick on a country for censorship. 

Hmmm ... so Wired *knew* they were probably going to be banned, so why
would they do something like this, then start sending out "press releases"
yelling about how their "rights" were being trampled?  After all, the only
thing that this sort of sensationalism could do is to sell more copies of
"Wired", so that people in the US (their biggest market, after all) would
have even more reason to read the story (buy the mag). 

It couldn't be just because someone was willing to capitalize on the
situation just to sell magazines, would it?  Naahh ... Wired wouldn't
stoop to such an outrageous trick.  Only mags like the "National Enquirer"
do stuff like that, right?
