A while ago we had the absolutists who believed that God provided a universal
standard of right and wrong that applied to everybody. Then we had the
relativists who believed that right and wrong only could be decided at a
personal level.

But more models of right and wrong are possible, including some that posit
universal truths as well as local responsbility. The United Nations statement
of universal rights is an attempt to formulate fundamental and universal
rights without invoking supernatural apparatus, for example.

Under my model the freedom of women to choose their own social and
sexual destiny is central, as is the concept that people have the
right to generate and understand whatever ideas they choose, with the
privacy necessary to prevent the state from interfering with this right.

And note that 'freedom of choice' does not merely mean lack of overt coercion,
it means that an array of alternatives actually exists and have a substantial
possibility of being chosen by the free person.

And some people might say there is no 'physical' definition of *anything*;
our entire perception is always filtered by our paradigms and prejudices
and our pathetic human bandwidth.
