Can I put Linux on my Amiga?

Hello, is there anybody there?

I am thinking of trying Linux on my A1200HD, but I'm not sure if the spec is
up to it.

I have a 200MB hard disk, about 8MB of RAM and only a floppy drive.

Is it going to be possible and can I get a copy of Linux on floppies?

Sorry, so many questions. I'm afraid I am a complete novice when it comes
to Linux and the Amiga. I have tried Linux on my PC for about 2 weeks but
there's so much to learn and I need the PC for work commitments etc, so
thought the Amiga my serve as a learning tool.

Thanks,

Raven.

Hi, Kevin,

No I don't have internet access on my Amiga yet. Looks like I'm in for an
up-hill struggle. Maybe if I try an emulator on my PC to download Linux,
I'll be able to move it over, or try and hook my modem up to my Amiga. Time
for the thinking-cap...

Sounds like I might have bitten off more than I can chew.

Many thanks for your help.

Raven.

There doesn't seem to be much activity in this group, I only occasionally check
it.

It may be possible to run Linux on your A1200HD. I believe an MMU (Memory
Management Unit) is required run Linux and I think (at least some) A1200's have
an MMU type cpu. Assuming you have one, you should be able to install Linux on
it.

It easier to do if you have internet access. You'll need an m68k Linux, check
out: http://www.clark.net/pub/lawrencc/linux/index.html

Most distributions do not seem to support a floppy install any more.
(Slackware may, but they don't seem to support m68k Linux.) The easiest way to
get Linux running for you will depend on your setup. Do you have internet
access using your Amiga? If so, you can down load the installation basics from
RedHat or Debian, install the core on your A1200, then use ftp to complete the
install. This is (basically) what I did to get Debian Linux running on my
A4000. For those not familiar with Linux installation, RedHat may be easier to
install.

Good Luck, and let us all know how it goes,

Kevin

There are lots of ways to proceed!

For example:

Download AmiTCP 4.0 demo and PPP1_45.lha (I'm assuming your ISP uses PPP).
These files will be in LHA compressed format, so download a de-compression
program for you Amiga if you don't already have one.

Put the download files onto a floppy and use CrossDOS to copy the files onto
your A1200.

Once these programs are configured, you can move your modem to your Amiga.
Voila, internet access through your Ami!

Would you happen to know where I can find a NIC for my A2000. I found some on the web but they didn't
sell them from there site and I couldn't find anywhere that sells them. I would like to connect it to my
network and eventualy maybe install Linux.
