I would like to know how to edit or view the association of an icon
(.info file). I normally work with PCs and am new to AmigaDOS. I'm
running KS 1.3 on a 2000.

I know that there are 4 types of icon files (disk, directory [drawer],
application[tool], and project[a file that's an argument to a tool]).
How do I know what application a project icon is associated with? The
manuals I have don't go that deep (or is it my head that's burried
deep?).

This is what I'm having trouble with specifically: I download a file
from the fish disks. I see icons for ReadMe type text files. When I
click on them nothing happens. This is because I don't have the app
(tool) it's looking for. So, if I could figure out what tool it wants,
I could get it and put it in the path. Or, if I could change the
associated tool, I could use one that I have (Notepad, More, etc.). The
way that I've been dealing with this is to copy an icon that is
associated with something I have to a file named what I want it to open
(did that make sense?). This has been a pain in the neck though, since
the fish disks use mostly the same tool for text files. It would be
easier if I could get the right tool.

Hey, stupidity is a relative concept :)

Thank you all for the help. I now have a clue. It was right there on
the work bench screen. (duh) :)

I've got a fairly limited newsreader right now, so for all I know, you've
already gotten a response. Click once on the readme icon. Then while
holding down the right mouse button, go to the first workbench menu item and
select info. This will give and information screen on the icon. Go to
tools, which will probably have something like more typed in. Just add
your drive path where more is located (e.g., c:more). I put more in my
c: so that I can use it like any other os command while in cli.

Off the subject, dump 1.3 and upgrade to 2.1, or better yet 3.1.
You'll be glad you did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

: How do I know what application a project icon is associated with?

While in the WorkBench, click once on the icon (with left button),
then bring your pointer up to the top bar, and click & hold the right
mouse button down. Select ICONS|INFORMATION. You'll see various
information on the icon. (I'm using 2.1, but I think the INFORMATION
location is the same in 1.3).

The sad part of this is there is no standard. Some people who add
icons to archives, associate the icon with a specific pathname and
program, such as SYS:Utilities/ppMore. But if you don't have ppMore
residing in SYS:Utilites/ then the file won't open. If you know the name
& loation of your text reader(s), go into information (as I mentioned
above), and change the default tool to the name & location of you text
reader. Then click the SAVE button, and double click the icon.

  Good luck,

Going to try to help early... so better advice might come along later!
If I remember right on (on 1.3 ) pulldown menus in the WB screen, the on
You need is INFORMATION. to get it you click once on it then get this menu
highlighted/selected. on 1.3 it's pretty lame but it atleast works. Insid
e this screen there should be three lines with verticle version of <> in them.
these are what you cange (if they Exsist). Realize there is a growing # of
programs that are PD that don't run on 1.3 so read the docs! [I was a die hard
"Why get a new OS person too! Beliee me it was worth ever penny for 2.05] in
fact for the 2000 there is some PD sofware to soft boot into either 1.3 or 2.x
my friend is using on his 500, it slows down his 68000 just a little but the
os is much more friendly than 3.x which I have and many PD things Guru!!!!!!!!!
the tool is like Super-View then use you iff viewer (give paths if not in
sys-path in startup-sequence) ect..)

Fred Fish disk ReadMe files almost always have ":muchmore" or
":c/muchmore" as their default tools. The MuchMore program is either in the
root directory or the C directory of the Fish disk. You can copy it from the
floppy to your C: or sys:Utilities directory, or change the default file
to whatever text reader you use.
