Australian Computer Society meetings have been free to anybody
with an interest in the subject being presented for many years.
It's only recently that a small fee has been levied. Small fees
are levied for the distribution of software bundled under the
spirit of the Free Software Foundation. Small fees are also
charged for Linux distributions.

The last opportunity to hear Richard Stallman was I believe at a
recent AUUG conference. The fee for the conference was somewhat
higher than the small fees the ACS have introduced.

Despite a small fee being charged by the ACS it should be noted
that when Phil Zimmerman presented an interesting talk in
Canberra a few months back, the room was filled with a variety of
people, not only interested in hearing the speaker, but also
willing to pay the small fee asked, as most were not ACS members.

There are normally a broad range of speakers at ACS branch
meetings. Details can normally be found at www.acs.org.au where
meetings are documented for each state of Australia.
