After AOL 5.0 installs the dialup adapters on the next re-boot you no
longer have any access to your DSL/T2/T3 internet thru you in house
network. AOL WILL deny this to be a problem. I have traced it down to
AOL 5.0 and windows 98 (with IE 5.0) I have replaced nic's, re-assigned
IP address, Completely removed all networking components and re-installed
them. Removed AOL 5.0 completely. The only SURE fix I have found is to
re-install 98(with the upgrade of course) But as SOON as you load up AOL
5.0 again and it configures its AOL adapters, the next re-boot same
thing. I spoke to the HEAD engineers at AOL yesterday. They claim that
AOL 5.0 was writter for stand alone machines and do not support running it
on a network, and that I should call microsoft, yea right, after giving
them a piece of my mind I decided to keep calling back. Finally I talk to
a decent tech, that said YEA, we are not supposed to say it's having
problems, but we are getting hundreds of calls a day from it. He was
goingi to passs me off internally to microsoft then of course my cell
phone went dead!!! What a day. Anyhow, if anyone can figure out how to fix
this problem at the component level. ie what file to downgrade/replace
etc. Please post it as this will be a MAJOR problem in the coming weeks
as people with 98 1 & 2 upgrade to AOL 5.0.
Thanks
Mike
Please e-mail me if you have any suggestions!!
Thanks

Well I guess that is one solution, in fact I called them the other day to
unsubscribe and got 2 months free AOL but that's another topic ~~ <giggle>
anyhow, what they are going to do is send me the CD for AOL 5.0 (which I have
not seen out in the stores or in mags yet) and that is supposed to fix it <yeah
right!!> IF the CD should happen to work I will let you know but I am not
holding my breath. Not only does it screw up my ISP but now it won't even let me
on with 5.0 I had to put 4.0 back in and all I can say is thank God that I had a
disk for 4.0 because you can't find a download on the AOL site for 4.0 anymore -
or if you can I sure can't find it. My problems didn't start happening until 2
weeks AFTER I had downloaded 5.0 and the tech that did call me back said that
was the first she had heard that one. <sigh>

Patti <~~ slowly but surely weaning herself OFF of AOL>
