Hi folks!
I'm new at this - posting in newsgroups as well as linux.

I have installed the Debian Linux 1.3 and im hopelessly stuck!
I can't connect to my SCSI CD-ROMs
    HP CD.Writer 6020i and Matshita cr-508.
Both connected to adaptec 2940 - found during boot-sequence.

My floppy wont talk to me (fd?? - msdos a-drive)

Where are my old dos partitions.

Please help!
My computer is a 166 Mhz Pentium, 96 MB ram
Adaptec 2940U scsi
  HP CD.Writer 6020i
  Matshita cr-508
2 standard IDE HD (hda & hdb)
Diamond S3 virge/dx 2 MB DRAM
modem

Scanner
HP deskjet 850

OK, you need to learn about "device names" and "mounting" filesystems.

Your CD-ROM drives are called "/dev/scd0" and "/dev/scd1", since
they are SCSI devices.

Your floppy disk is /dev/fd0

Your DOS partitions are probably /dev/hdaX (X is a number of 1-8).

In order to use any of these, you will need to "mount" them, i.e.
place them somewhere in the directory tree that makes up the entire
filesystem. For the CD-ROM's, try the following command:

   mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom

The files on the CD should now appear in the directory /mnt/cdrom (this
directory must exist before you run the "mount" command).

Same with the floppy:

   mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

Again, the /mnt/floppy directory must exist before you run the command.
Also, if you want to use Win95 long filenames, use "-t vfat" instead of
"-t msdos".

Alternatively, you can use the "mtools" package to access floppies.
This is a set of commands that work like the MS-DOS commands, but with
an "m" in front: mdir, mformat, mcopy, mdel etc.

Your IDE disks are /dev/hda and /dev/hdb, probably. If you have only
one partition on each, that will be /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdb1. So, just
like the CD and the floppies, you can mount these to get access to the
files.

   mkdir /dos_c
   mkdir /dos_d
   mount -s msdos /dev/hda1 /dos_c
   mount -t msdos /dev/hdb1 /dos_d

To make things a bit easier, add some lines to /etc/fstab - then you
don't have to remember all the options, but can merely do "mount /dos_c"
or "mount /mnt/cdrom". For your setup, something like this:

   /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdwrite iso9660 noauto,user 0 0
   /dev/scd1 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
   /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy msdos noauto,user 0 0
   /dev/hda1 /dos_c msdos noauto,user,umask=000 0 0
   /dev/hdb1 /dos_d msdos noauto,user,umask=000 0 0

I've added some extra options here:

"noauto" means that these filesystems are not mounted automatically when
the system boots. If you always want your DOS partitions to be available,
just remove that (or change it to "auto").

"user" means that you do not need to be logged in as "root" in order
to mount the filesystems.

"umask=000" on the MS-DOS filesystems allows any user full read/write
access to the files.

Note that there is nothing "magic" about the directory names shown
here - if you don't like "/mnt/floppy" or /dos_c", use whatever
directory you like. It just needs to be an existing, empty directory.

Also, I would recommend reading something about UNIX system administration,
e.g. the Linux "Installation and Getting Started" guide from the LDP
(Linux Documentation Project) - http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/

Dont know about the SCSI ones - maybe someone else will know. As
for the floppy, a floppy drive is NOT an "msdos" drive. A
diskette can be formatted as an msdos diskette. Put in an msdos
diskette and type
    mdir
and see what you get. if that works, "man mtools".

And your old dos partitions: try this
    mkdir /dosc
    mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /dosc

assuming your C drive was the first partition. If it was Win95
VFAT, change "msdos" above to "vfat".

If that works, edit /etc/fstab and put in the proper values, so
that it is automatically mounted each time you boot. Be sure to
"mkdir" the mount points (one time job) manually first.
