Dear Reader,
Ordinarily I don't send out copies of my newsletter ENERGIES without
request, but having the Climate Canary mailing list on hand (and being on
the list myself) was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. Without
explanation of what ENERGIES is, three issues are included. ENERGIES is
free, and like the Canary should be redistributed.
The more people that read publications like the Canary and my own
ENERGIES, the quicker action might take place on the global
warming/climate change/energy issue.

ENERGIES... Week of September 28, 1997
PRESIDENT CLINTON invited some 100 television weathermen to the
White House this week to encourage them to break the news on global
warming and climate change. It was hoped that amiable science-oriented
personalities could help convince the public that the economy could grow
while still cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions. Only Ted Turner's
CNN seemed to agree by dropping anti-global warming treaty advertisements.
The economy could grow with the injection of some new ideas,
industries and policies. Here are a few.. from this editor.
DEVELOP COMPONENT UPGRADEABLE CARS. As we now do with computers,
build hybrid and pure electric vehicles on standardized platforms to take
advantage of improving technologies. Build this new breed of long-lasting
cars to meet the demands of a technology-savvy generation. Believe it or
not, auto manufacturers could benefit.
USE INTER-MODAL TICKETING to encourage the use of energy efficient
mass transit. One ticket could get a traveler from train to bus to
airplane to ferry and a cab ride home. Include detailed directions and
maps.
CONSTRUCT DUAL OR LOW VOLTAGE BUILDINGS. Low voltage electricity
from solar photovoltaic cells could power lights, refrigerators,
computers and television sets. Don't worry about conversion to high
voltage for a grid connection. Utility companies shouldn't fear; they too
can get into the solar business.
ELECTRIFY WINDOWS. Help Mother Nature heat or cool a building.
Install electrical wiring to windows that can run automated window
systems - with overrides, of course. Control the temperature in a room by
adjusting blinds or opening the window. New product possibilities for
window and window treatment manufacturers are endless.
BUILD A "NATIONAL ENERGY CENTER." On a par with the best science
museums, build an educational marketplace for energy, technologies and
services - like those above. Make it an outlet and a meeting place for
sales and marketing to worldwide customers. Stress the educational
benefits to the general public and the business world. The Energy Center
could live through generations and outlast the whims of politicians.
And wishful thinking for the political arena...
CREATE AN ENERGY MARKETING TAX CREDIT for the advertising and
marketing of energy efficient products and services. In the U.S., slick
marketing and advertising can sell anything. The best products can go
unnoticed if the company can't market them. Give the most energy
efficient products and services an edge in the marketplace.
BRING BACK THE ENERGY TAX CREDIT of the 70's to encourage energy
savings, build the alternative energy industry, and give people a tax
break.
AND ABOVE ALL, PASS CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM. Eliminate the
possibility that established, deep pocketed industries might be creating
political barriers to entry for clean, renewable or energy efficient
products and services into the marketplace.

GO RENEWABLE, choose the Green-e Logo. Californians can be assured
of at least 50% renewable energy content if they choose a utility
sporting the Green-e Logo(r). Pilot power deregulation programs in New
Hampshire and Massachusetts showed that a high percentage of
participants, about a third in Massachusetts, wanted to purchase
"green"energy. However, there was no standard as to what was green. The
Green-e Renewable Electricity Branding Program creates guidelines for
providers and certification by the use of the Logo.
Starting in January of next year some 13 million California
households will be given the opportunity to choose their electricity
supplier as well as its source. Under power deregulation some 100
companies will be looking for a piece of the $20 billion California
consumer electric pie.
Companies who wish to participate in the Green-e program, and use
the Green-e Logo, must meet the program's strict requirements. Aside from
offering at least 50% renewable energy for a specific electricity
product, companies must abide by a Code of Conduct governing business
practices and provide customers with regular information about the
sources of the electricity they purchase. An oversight committee, the
Green Power Board, will monitor participating companies.
The program was developed by the Center for Resource Solutions with
input from Independent Energy Producers Association and the Environmental
Defense Fund.

distributable by e-mail without attachments.)
EV'S IN THE BIG APPLE. The New York Power Authority and the
Electric Fuel Corporation will be working together toward the possible
introduction of an electric zinc-air fleet battery system for the New
York City area. The "Electric Business Vehicle Project" is a
demonstration project in which fleet and transit operators, along with
environmental and government organizations, are expected to work in
partnership with Electric Fuel and NYPA towards that ultimate goal.
The Electric Fuel system consists of a zinc-air battery built with
replaceable zinc anode cassettes (known as "Electric Fuel" (r)), an
automated battery refueling method for replacing the spent cassettes, and
a process to recycle the cassettes. A study to build a cassette recycling
facility is part of the project.
The refuelable battery eliminates the lengthy recharging process
needed with most battery powered EV's. New York Power Authority already
manages more than 65 EV's, including a school bus.

THREE TRILLION U.S. DOLLARS in worldwide power generation
infrastructure will be needed by 2020, according to a report just issued
by PowerGen PLC. A world population growth of 50% and booming economies
in Asia, as well as population shifts and life-style changes are reasons
cited for the needed investment.
Aside from powering toasters, television sets and factories,
electricity is also needed to support the growing worldwide
energy-dependent information technology revolution. Electric cars and
buses too will eventually require their own infrastructure improvements.
The biggest challenge for electricity producers will be how to
balance the power needs of growing economies while facing increasing
concerns over the environment and carbon dioxide emissions contributing
to global warming.
According to the study, the U.S. will still be the largest energy
user in the world, with China a close second by 2020. For the complete
study, visit PowerGen's web site at www.pgen.com/ .
MORE WASTE-TO-ENERGY facilities could add to the worldwide power
infrastructure. DTE Biomass Energy of Michigan already produces enough
electricity to power nearly 11,500 homes by burning methane gas recovered
from landfill dumps. Another biomass energy plant is ready to go on line
to power an additional 2000 homes.
Methane is also a greenhouse gas and and is released into the
atmosphere unless it is recaptured for productive use. Burning methane
for power generation makes CO2, but can reduce CO2 from other fossil fuel
fired plants by reducing demand on those facilities. DTE's facilities in
Michigan prevent some 17,700 tons of methane each year from being
released into the atmosphere.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that there are
about 700 landfill operations in the U.S. that could become
waste-to-energy facilities.
STATE FARM INSURANCE has issued an El Nino alert for the media.
Included are tips on how to prepare for expected foul winter weather and
the potential for natural disaster caused by the flare up of "The Little
One"
California residents in particular should be prepared for an
especially nasty winter with its effects on life, limb and property,
according to State Farm. Some reports claim that El Nino events in the
Pacific Ocean are getting more frequent and powerful - perhaps because of
a warming planet.
Property insurers are concerned about global warming, since they pay
much of the tab for damage from extreme weather events. Property owners
should check their coverage with their insurance agent.
