Antoine Lahad has warned that his troops are likely to turn their weapons against Israel if the IDF unilaterally withdraws from the security zone. In an interview with the French newspaper "Le Figaro," he said that an Israeli withdrawal "without an international accord countersigned by Syria" would cause half of his army to join the ranks of Hizbullah. "The others will create a new anti-Israeli militia that will oblige Israel to come back to the region in force," he said. MK Yossi Beilin (Labor), who favors unilateral withdrawal, yesterday criticized Lahad's comments. He said Israel cannot stay in Lebanon just to protect the SLA. Lahad was quoted as saying that any pullout without a prior agreement would represent a major victory for Hizbullah and that the SLA would be unable to defend the northern border on its own. Lahad, in an apparent direct appeal to Israeli public opinion, noted that 600 SLA soldiers have been killed since the alliance was forged with Israel and hundreds, including himself, have been sentenced to death by Lebanese courts. "I say to the government and the people of Israel: It has been more than 20 years that the SLA, which is 55 percent Moslem and 45% Christian, has worked with you," he said. "In 14 years, 600 of our members have been killed, and 200 left handicapped. Several hundred others have been condemned to die by the Lebanese government. If you withdraw, you will not be able to let them down." "I haven't fought for 13 years to let Hizbullah and the Palestinians return to the border zone." Meanwhile, Amal leader Nabih Berri has reportedly asked Iran for assistance to help the movement's militia in its fight against the IDF and the SLA. Lebanese newspapers quoted sources as saying that Berri's recent meetings with senior officials in Iran had helped improve Lebanese-Iranian-Syrian relations. Berri reportedly asked for Iran to help train Amal squads taking part in "resistance operations." Berri, who is also speaker of the Lebanese parliament, reportedly discussed relations between Islamic and nationalist elements in Lebanon with his Iranian hosts and Iran's diplomatic role through its ambassadors to Syria and Lebanon.
