Hebron Update: October 5-11, 1997

Sunday, October 5
The team attended services at St. Georges Church in Jerusalem. It was
the last Sunday for Father Nayim Ateek, who has served that
congregation for 12 1/2 years. He was dearly loved by the
congregation and was a great support for the CPT team over the last
two years. He will be greatly missed by his parishoners and by the
team.

Monday, October 6
There was new anti-Arab graffiti on the freshly-painted shop doors of
Shuhada Street. The road blocks that had been set up on both ends of
Shuhada for the Jewish holidays remained in place.

Tuesday, October 7
The team met with Abed, from the land office, who reported the new
construction and demolitions near the settlements in the Hebron
district. (See map report, September 1997).

Thursday, October 9
A Palestinian reporter stated that settlers at Beit Anoun pursued
several Palestinian youth and shot one in the hand. Anne witnessed
Israeli bulldozers destroying roadside fruit and vegetable stands near
Halhul on her way to Jerusalem. An American friend also told several
team members that soldiers had "made vegetable soup" out some Bedouin
women's roadside markets near Jerusalem on Wednesday.

Friday, October 10
The IDF arrested an 18-year-old Palestinian male in Hebron, beat him,
and took him to prison in Kiryat Arba. He was released in the
evening. (See related article.)

Saturday, October 11
Sara and Janet went with a local journalist, to visit Mohammed Al
Nazar, the young man who had been arrested the previous day. They
then went to the District Co-ordinating Office (DCO) where a young
man, Zidaan Sharabati, was filing a complaint about a beating he had
received a week ago from soldiers. He explained that his family lives
on Shuhada Street across from Beit Hadassah (a Jewish settlement). He
was stopped at the checkpoint across from his house and a soldier
began pushing and hitting him. When he began to push back, seven
soldiers surrounded him and severely beat him. He passed out and laid
unconscious on the ground for 20 minutes until an ambulance came. He
stated that the incident was related to a previous argument that he
and his brother had had with the soldiers.

After leaving the DCO, the journalist pointed out a waste water pipe
coming from the Israeli military compound and sticking out of the side
of the hill. The water drops onto the ground below, polluting the
ground water of the Palestinian houses at the bottom of the hill. The
families have begun to develop skin diseases and typhoid as a result.

Around noon, there was an explosion in the marketplace under the
Israeli settlement of Avraham Avinu. Soldiers cleared a section of
the market and detained four young Palestinian men. They were held
for several hours, but all were released by 3:00.
