Please Forward and Help Human Rights Activist and Journalist Arrested Following the Publication of a Report on Torture Khaled al-Amayreh, a journalist from the village of Dura near Hebron, was arrested yesterday by agents of the Preventative Security Service. This follows the publication yesterday of his report on the torture of Hamas activists arrested over the past few months in an Israeli-Arab newspaper, Saut al-Haq w'al-Huriya (The Voice of Truth and Freedom). The newspaper is a weekly published by Islamicists in the Israeli Arab city of Um al-Faham. al-Amayreh is a member of the board of trustees of the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group in Jerusalem. He is 41 years old, married, and the father of seven children. Before the publication of the report yesterday, he contacted PHRMG Director Bassem Eid and informed him that the article was due to be published. "He knew there was a chance he would be arrested, and he wanted to know that we would stand by him. Palestine needs more brave journalists like Khaled willing to express their views even in the face of suppression." Quotes from the report by Khaled al-Amayreh, based on prison interviews: "I was being tortured so severely, that I called out for God to have mercy on me. The interrogator said that if God will come, we will arrest him as well." -Wa'el As'ad, prisoner "They took off my clothes, and lay me out on the floor of the room. They poured cold water on me, and started to beat me with a broomstick. When it broke, they brought another one." -Iyad Imreish, prisoner The PHRMG has sent letters protesting the arrest of al-Amayreh and demanding his release. According to the Palestinian Press Law of 1995, al-Amayreh should be free to pursue his profession with impunity. However, he has been harassed by the security forces in the past. The Minister of Information is responsible for the upholding of the Press Law, and should therefore act quickly and publicly for the release of al-Amayreh's release. The PHRMG calls on the Palestinian and international human rights community to come to the aid of Khaled al-Amayreh. He is a well known journalist and political commentator who has never called for the use of violence. Please send messages of protest to: President Yasser Arafat Attorney General Fayez Abu-Rahme Palestinian Authority Palestinian Authority Al-Muntada Yarmouk, Gaza Gaza, PA Attorney General's Building Fax: 972-7-822-365 Fax: 972-7-824-503 THE PALESTINIAN HUMAN RIGHTS MONITORING GROUP http://www.lebnet.com/phrmg POB 19918 Jerusalem 972-2-6262463 fax: 972-2-6262378 eid4hr@aquanet.co.il The Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group (PHRMG) POB 19918 =95 Jerusalem tel: +972-2-6262463 fax: +972-2-6262378 eid4hr@aquanet.co.il http://www.lebnet.com/phrmg

It is my knowledge that Hamas has been victimizing civilians since its inception in 1988. The world is certainly aware that the (ISLAMIC) Hamas is behind suicidal bombings. But the world does not realize that the assholes at Hamas have started their victimization among the Palestinian people first and (FOREMOST). How many freedom fighters have Hamas victimized in 1988, when the Intifada was at its beginning? Why? The fact that the criminal Muslim Brotherhood, members of Hams are lurking behind religion and national slogans shall not hinder the Palestinians from casting their voices. It is true that Arafat is corrupt to the bone. But that does not mean that the people of Palestine should look in the imperialistic trash of Hamas and its thugs from the US to Europe who stand behind its financing and operations. In sum. Let Hamas and her imperialistic masters go to hell. The people who are fooled with the Rabbi Yussin and Rabbi Abu Marzook, will realize one day what Hamas is all about. -- Shabatai Zvi, (HIPRS) Chicago, IL, USA. http://www.hebron.com
