*** *Settlers force way into Jiftlik Agricultural Station* ***

                          by Adel Abu Ne'emeh

A PNA minister was arrested on monday by the Israeli army following
clashes between Palestinian farmers and soldiers at the Jiftlik
  Agricultural Station near Jericho.

The Minister of Agriculture Selah Abdel Jawwad said he was shoved
into a military jeep, and searched before being released an hour
later. "It is no surprise that the Netanyahu government shows no
hesitation in arresting a minister of the PNA," he said.

"This is a government that goes about destroying the Oslo Accords
by any number of means - settlements, house demolation, and the
freezing of funds that belong to the Palestinians," he explained.

The clashes occured after scores of Palestinian farmers and emplo-
yees of the Ministery of Agriculture gathered at the Jiftlik Agri-
cultural Station to thwart a group of settlers, backed by the Is-
raeli army, from taking over the experimental site. The protest had
been called for by the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to AFP, some 300 Palestinians, headed by employees from
  the Ministry of Agriculture, attended.

Clashes broke out after the soldiers, using truncheons, tried to
evict the Palestinian from the site. Several Palestinians, included
by Reuters photographer Hassan Titi, suffered slight concussion.

"This is a barbarous act especially as the sit-in was peaceful,"
Abdel Jawwad said, noting that two Director Generals of the Ministry
and several farmers, advanced in age, were beaten up.

Abdel explained that the sit-in was response to a foray made by the
  settlers last Friday.

"They started tilling the land in full violation of the clauses of
the Oso Accords which said that the station would be returned to the
Palestinians in August 1995," Abdel Jawwad said.

Sources in the Palestinian Liaison Bureau said that the talks bet-
ween the two sides had come to litle. The Israelis had insisted on
keeping the station in the hands of the settlers. They declared
Jiftlik a closed military area. The palestinians were forced at gun-
point back onto the trucks on which they have arrived, and taken to
the Palestinian-controlled village of Al-Aujah, north of Jericho.
