Thanks for your explanation.

If I read you correctly, what you are trying to say is this:

Many people in Austria were unsatisfied with the politicians en the way the
country was governed. More out of protest, than agreement with Haider, they
voted FP. More like "contra-votes" than "support-votes".

I was wondering: do the people of Austria HAVE to vote (by law, like Belgium
has for instance) or is everyone free to vote or not ? (I'm asking this,
because if everyone was free NOT to vote, why didn't they make THAT choice
instead of voting for the FP ? Not voting could also be considered a
"contra-vote"...).

Also, I'm curious how many people actually voted in total (percentage of the
people allowed to vote I mean)... Maybe many Austrians who voted for Haider
now regret their choice? I ask this because I was told that one of the
arguments that Herr Schssel used to defend his choice for the FP was that
otherwise there would be new elections, and than the FP would get even MORE
votes than they got now. If THIS is true, than many votes could not have
been "contra-votes" I think...

I do not know much about how many political parties there are in Austria
(except for the VP, SP and FP) but are there not other parties that
"protesters" could have voted?

---

As to your point "1":
I have seldom heard about a government that was loved by all the people in
that country. Usually everyone dislikes whomever happens to be in charge at
the moment...
"Blaming the politicians" is a common sport in almost every country...

As to your point "2":
Hmmmmm....

As to your point "3":
Don't forget that it is considered "politically correct" to flame the
current situation in Austria, so, if I hear a politician (any politician, in
any country) say anything about that, I will never be sure if he doesn't
have a "double agenda" (if you know what I mean). This is not to say that I
believe they are not honest about what they are saying, I only means that I
can never be sure of that... (although in this case I'll give them the
benefit of the doubt, just for now...)

As to your question...
I'm subscribed to all of them :)
