Brief biographies of speakers (detailed bios available as hand-outs):
John Preston is the Director of Technology Development at The Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. As Director, he manages the Technology Licensing
Office (The TLO) which is responsible for patenting and licensing of MIT,
Lincoln Laboratory and Whitehead Institute inventions and software. His
professional activites have been directed toward technology transfer, and
specifically toward issues related to starting new high technology companies.
He has founded and assisted in founding several successful high tech companies
including Molten Meta Technology.
In addition, about 60 companies, mostly spin-offs of MIT, have been started,
in part, through his efforts (15 are public companies). The MIT Technology
Licensing Office is one of the most successful licensing offices in the
country, with hundreds of active licenses.
Mr. Preston received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics from the
University of Wisconsin, and his M.B.A. from Northwestern University.
He is a director of six high-tech companies and serves as an advisor for
several Government agencies, as well as the MIT E-Club and The MIT "10K"
Student Competition (for Best New Business Start-Up Idea with Accompanying
Market Research and Fully Developed Business Plan), now in its Fifth Year.
Mr. Joseph Hadzima is a senior partner at the Boston-based law firm of
Sullivan & Worcester, specializing in business and securities law.
His work involves directing start-up ventures for public and private companies
and licensing for high-technology ventures. Since 1984 he has served as a
visiting lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management, and he has also
lectured at Boston University. In addition, he is actively involved in
the MIT business community as an advisor to the MIT Enterprise Forum, and
he serves as an annual judge for the MIT $10K Student Competition.
Mr. Hadzima also writes for the Boston Business Journal, a publication
serving venture capitalists and entrepreneurs throughout the Boston area.
Mr. Hadzima received his B.S. from the Massachusetts Institue of Technology,
an S.M. from MIT's Sloan School of Management, and the J.D. from Harvard Law.
Michael Cassidy is the Co-Founder and President of Stylus Innovation, Inc,
a Cambridge-based company of seven people grossing $1.5 million annually.
Formerly, Mr. Cassidy worked for Hughes Aircraft, where he helped design
the revolutionary solar-powered Sunraycer car. In addition, as an MIT Alum,
along with two MIT students, he entered the MIT Entrepreneurs Club's $10K
Contest by proposing a business venture involving a bar-code/touch-tone
conversion device for remote, telphone-based grocery ordering and other
product and service tracking applications. Using the prize money as seed
capital, he co-developed, then licensed this device to the largest distributor
of VeriFone products for $8 million.
Mr. Cassidy received his B.S. and Master's in Aerospace Engineering from the
Massachussetts Institute of Technology in 1985 and 1986, respectively.
He graduated with an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1991.
Mark Goldberg, is President and CEO of MBRI, Inc., a firm specializing
in startup biotech companies. Mr. Goldberg will speak on the finance aspect
of entrepreneurship. Additional biographical materials on Mr. Goldberg
will be included in the hand-outs.
Richard Shyduroff is Co-Founder and Co-Director of The MIT Entrepreneurs Club
(aka: "The E-Club"), and the original inventor of the MIT "$10K" Competition.
He teaches MIT undergraduate seminars 089 & 095 on Technology Start-Ups and
`all aspects of related new business, networking and support activities at
MIT and beyond,' as well as related courses appropriately scaled for middle
and high school kids in MIT's Educational Studies Program, where he also
serves as Seminar Director.
Mr. Shyduroff has been involved in technology and art-related start-ups since
his teenage years, has been doing networking and fundraising for start-ups,
for both profit and not-for-profits, since 1968, and has co-designed and
co-operated art galleries, a forge-and-foundry business, his own small-
scale iron works, several real estate ventures, a British West Indies-based
orchid and plant-hunting business (with an international cast of wild and
not-manageable partners), and The Cambridge Institute for the Arts and
Sciences, which included a small business incubator with community-oriented
support services for start-ups and rare-plant cloning laboratory. At the same
time, Mr. Shyduroff attended Harvard Extension School to study plant biology
and mycology in preparation for related new enterprises in the future.
Currently Mr. Shyduroff is proposing to design and develop a multimedia
conferencing center with on-site electronic documentation publishing
and food services, in MIT's Pritchett Lounge & Green Room in Walker
Memorial. The proposed project would result in the MIT E-Club's first
physical home base, to be made available to the MIT Community for electronic
and face-to-face meetings, conferencing and special educational events,
possibly providing research material sufficient for a proposed parallel
thesis in MIT's Master of Science in Architecural Studies program.
