Hi,

	Tau Beta Pi is setting up an ESL program as a service to the local
community.  We need volunteers to receive training and teach ESL on a
one-to-one basis.

	Here are some facts that strike me very much and speak for the
urgency and need of such an ESL program.  The following statistics come
from the Cambridge Community Development Department and are based on the US
Census:

- More than one in five Cambridge residents over age 5 was foreign born in
  1990.  Over half of this group arrived between 1980 and 1990
- There are 21000 foreign-born people in Cambridge
- More than one in four residents over 5 speak a language other than
English at home
- Ten percent of residents do not speak English "very well," over twice the
percentage in 1980
- Those who speak a language other than English at home include 4741
speaking Spanish, 4150 speaking French or French Kreyol, 3619 speaking
Portuguese, 2960 speaking Chinese, and 1043 speaking Korean

	You DON'T need to be an English major or even a native English
speaker to do this.  You only need to understand rudimentary English
grammar and be able to converse in English.  And you are asked to make a
one-year 1.5 hours/wk commitment to teach.  The training will start some
time in mid to late July and is consisted of 2-3 days of 2-3 hour sessions.

	Certainly you will have extra time during the summer besides your
UROP or job.  Make your summer meaningful by volunteering! :) Ask you
friends to volunteer also!
