Historically, Tai Chi is a form of Martial Arts that evolved from Shao Lin Kung Fu, which uses the movements of animals as its guide. Tai Chi evolved largely from the Snake and Crane styles. It is formally called Tai Chi Chuan, meaning "Grand Ultimate Boxing." Tai Chi differs from other martial arts in that it is "Soft" as opposed to "Hard": practiced and performed completely relaxed, with no muscular tension. Tai Chi relies on alignment, centering and sensitivity for success. But Tai Chi is far more than a martial art. It is called "Grand Ultimate" because it helps us to achieve our potential in the areas of Preventive Health and Personal Development as well as self-defense. Classes are held at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 1561 McClendon Ave (east of Little Five Points, across from Candler Park). Park in the back parking lot (not on the street) and enter the on the Mell Street side, down in the basement.
