I have always been told that fire is part of the natural ecosystem of boreal places such Alberta. Is the problem that people have moved onto land that is naturally fire- prone? -- theo hopkins ___________________________ Fire prone in freezing weather? Not normally. Nor have we ever had 18 forest fires in freezing weather. At any rate, we got 3 inches of beautiful snow today so everybody's quite excited. It was an interesting snow storm though. It came along with thunder and lightening, just like rain does!!!! By the way, the other day I mentioned about Russia having minus 115 degree temperatures. That was Fahrenheit, I believe. It was -60 centigrade anyway. I'm not good at the conversions. Ever since Prime Minister Trudeau converted Canada to the metric system many years ago, most Canadians haven't been able to figure out which is what. (A real pain when you go grocery shopping and look at those metric scales.) Do you know our home scales, rulers, and car speedometers are still in both conversions because Canadian's still can't figure things out? That was another foolish political project that was a waste of taxpayer money. Getting back to weather, there sure have been some nightmarish weather patterns around the world lately. Americans sure got hit badly with their floods and winds. Australia is experiencing some of the biggest fires ever. Thousands of hectares of land were burnt and many people were injured. Did you read about the 18 year old girl who's car got stuck in the mud? She panicked and ran from the car, and got burnt to death right away. Her car remained intact. The most scary part was of that fire was that 10,000 sheep and their wheat crop were destroyed. We might be paying big bucks for wool and bread soon. The head of the Word Wide Fund for Nature said more tropical forests burnt in 1997 than at any time in world history. The Director called the fires a planetary disaster, claiming that 80% of the forest fires were set deliberately, often by large multinational companies clearing land. Now that's the most serious issue facing mankind today, in my eyes -- people deliberately destroying the earth with fire. What can we do to discourage them? To me, that's far more important than emissions. Other reports: Two million hectares of forest were destroyed in Asia. Fires in the Brazilian Amazon are up by 50 percent since last year. Here's a cute one: 250 km winds in Guam BLEW DOWN equipment the measured wind speeds at the military Joint Typhone Warning Centre. The Governer said it was one of the worst in Guam history. The damaging winds lasted 12 hours. The bible revelations (as well as those of Nostradamus) are coming true, and there's nothing a bunch of politicians contemplating on how to raise costs to cut emissions can do about it. And speaking of cutting emissions, I wonder how many of those politicians SHARED their airplanes with a full load of passengers on the way down to that conference? I once heard that a single jet sent out as much emission as 800 cars.-- Alleycat
