A Christmas Gift for the Person with Everything

Canadian weather has sure been acting strange lately. People in
Alberta were happy when the first snowfall came a few days ago because
everything was burning even though it was freezing out. But already
the 3 inches brought to us by Donner and Blitzen (thunder and
lightning) are starting to melt. We might have a green Christmas
after all.

Sad news to the snowmobile and snow plough dealers, the skiers, and
the power tobogganers. Some of those tobogganers have killed
themselves because they couldn't wait until winter. They built snow
mountains on the rivers and went charging over them at great speeds,
only to have the ice crack when they fell from the sky with the heavy
machines on the other end. Hopefully others will learn.

Again, we're experiencing the problems of so many degrees above in the
daytime and so many degrees below at night -- just enough to freeze up
our hoses so we can't water the grass if it burns.

Canadians now have something new to offer, so if you're looking for a
gift for the person who has everything, you might want to get a
Canadian tree. Some are equipped with surprise grab bags.

The other day a number of people in Manitoba got unusual surprises
with their Christmas trees. As soon as the pretty trees thawed in
their cozy warm houses, the bugs nesting in them thought it was spring
and several came to life. They were far from mini mites -- quite ugly
actually. The bug people had to look them up to identify them.

Reminds me of the cute story last year in which someone was setting
up a tree and, like a miracle, a baby owl flew out of it and perched
on the top like a star. The story was on TV and in the picture was in
the newspapers. It had been caught in the middle of the tightly
bound tree outside for several weeks so it was quite a wonder the poor
hungry bird survived.

Well, one thing's for certain. Canadian Christmases are increasingly
more interesting. -- Alleycat
