In response to arguments concerning the fact or otherwise of global warming we are heading for another ice age with a period of global warming on the way to it. The period of warming may be less than a few centuries but as we only have 70 years of oxygen left * the period hardly concerns us. After working with various agencies for several years as a sort of 1 man protest group there was, in the summer of 96, 3 announcements made in a week. These confirmed global warming as a fact, sea level rises as a fact but not enormous ones in UK * and global heating due to a build up of greenhouse gases in addition to natural heating. I seem to recall that the announcements were by the UN or WMO, (who had already come clean in part and see the result in Lloyds List of around August 94 though Lloyds haven't done much about it yet), the UK Dept. of Environment and the Environment Agency (was the NRA or Nat. Rivers Authority). * notes. The announcement was made in the US and reported in the UK on national news, once I think, as a result of a single computer model of the climate. This was several years ago. Subsequent reports of the study, the best done so far that anyone's told us about, have indicated a slight shift in the North Atlantic warm current that stops Lenningrad icing up and lets palms grow on the East coast of Scotland. This will mean winters not warmer but colder for Britain after an initial warmer period much like mainland Europe. The model took into consideration all tree projects then known of any size and did not know that a lot of oxygen was going into space through the hole in the ozone layer (simplified version). Later it was pointed out by someone that rather than all cities at sea level going 250 feet under in 250 years it now meant that they would only be 50 feet under in 100 years and only 100 feet under in 250 years. There was no time scale given for temporary or permanent shallow flooding. The announcements seemed to come from US bodies, maybe Universities. What all this means is that lower bits of Bangladesh will flood permanently within 30 years and islands will continue to depopulate. (Sea covers reefs so dying so no fish and coastal strips of farmland flood. Some places beach palms are now entirely under water. The 3 cm. allowed for water level rises when building the Thames Barrier is now taken up so there is no leeway over the estimated highest surge tide levels so from about 1995 limited flooding of the City of London is likely even if the barrier is used.) Lower areas of Britain will flood permanently within 30 years to a depth of a foot or so losing all marshes, almost, plus more land. This will be preceded by one or more temporary floods. While a quarter of the third of Britain liable to flood could be saved the only money available will be to coffer dam nuclear power stations to prevent marine pollution. This is why new coast roads, central roads to link sites where little hill towns can be built and a few other links cannot be argued against by protestors. Projects can usually, however, be made more environmentally suitable. As there will be less oxygen to mix with hydrogen and other gases in the atmosphere there will be less water but fiercer electrical storms. (Remember a lit spill being touched to a bell of hydrogen in the school lab.?) As belts for growing things move so governments must take advantage. In the USA, CIS and China there are areas that could already be planted with squares of trees to later comprise, hopefully, tropical rain forest. US government ambitions must concentrate pine growth at higher levels and leave lower areas for broadleaved and even jungle species. Ask not what you can do for your planet but what you can do for it's forests for they are our only salvation.
