Shake -- A Makefile Generator

Those of you who were at Melbourne's last summer AUUG conference may
remember the paper I gave on a makefile generator tool I had built.
Well, after 10 months of ocassional hacking (and, eventually, a complete
rewrite) this tool, Shake, is available for beta testing.

Shake is a macro processor that builds makefiles. Unlike imake,
the macros are defined as arbitrary shell scripts, allowing much
smarter and more flexible directives.

With shake, you get modules that support complex hierarchies,
smart installation, C, C++, yacc, lex, TeX, LaTeX, SliTeX
and UIL. You can easily add your own modules, as needed.

It has been our experience at Iconix, that any programmer who uses shake
is almost immediately hooked by its simplicity and ease of use. So
why not try it yourself?

The code is available for anonymous ftp from munnari.oz.au.
Cd to the directory usr/shake; the file "shake.tar.Z" contains the
entire distribution (you'll need an ANSI C compiler. I highly recommend
gcc if you don't already have one).

For those who look before they leap, the manual is available separately
as "manual.ps.Z".
