** README File for Windows Archive at ftp.monash.edu.au
** mirroring ftp.cica.indiana.edu
**
** Last Updated 12:09 Mon May 15 1995
**
** Introduction
The Internet site, ftp.monash.edu.au, mirrors the Microsoft Windows archive
site at ftp.cica.indiana.edu. It includes Windows tips, utilities and
demonstrations. The archive currently maintains approximately
1.6 gigabytes of Microsoft Windows related material. The files are not
virus checked, nor tested for functionality, so you must assume full
responsibility for their use on your machine. Fetchfile is no longer supported.
The archive is updated daily at 10:00 PM AEST.
** Access to Archive
Ftp access to our archive is quite simple: type "ftp ftp.monash.edu.au"
to your prompt. You'll be asked for a login name (type "anonymous" or "ftp").
Enter username@hostname.domain for a password.
** Finding Software: The INDEX File
Go into the win3 directory ("cd pub/win3"), and see what we have by
getting the ASCII file called "INDEX" (type "get INDEX" to your ftp
prompt). The file "INDEX.ZIP" is the pkzip'ed version of the "INDEX"
file. This file contains an ordered list of the files in each
subdirectory with a brief one line description of each file. You must
type "bin" or "tenex" before getting INDEX.ZIP.
** Downloading Software
Most of the Windows 3 archives are in the "zip" format for which you will
need the pkunzip utility. A copy of pkunzip can be found in the pub/pc
directory on ftp.monash.edu.au
Change into individual directories (e.g., "cd pub/win3/fonts") and issue
a "dir" or "ls" command to see the available files. When you are ready
to download, tell ftp you're transferring binary files (type "tenex"
or "binary" to your ftp prompt) and you're ready to fetch files ("get
filename").
** Uploading Software
Windows files should be uploaded to the primary source of the archive which
is ftp.cica.indiana.edu. Your upload will automatically appear on our archive
the next time CICA is mirrored. This will occur within 24 hours of your upload.
I will normally not accept uploads if it could have been uploaded to CICA.
If, for some reason, you feel that you must upload a file to our archive,
then please place all uploads in the "pub/uploads" subdirectory and send
mail to "steve@cc.monash.edu.au" BRIEFLY describing your contribution.
The same rules apply to uploading as downloading: if the file is a PC
binary, type "tenex" or "bin" first before doing a "put filename".
I would like to set some sort of standard file format here so that you
don't need fifteen different file compression utilities to unwrap the
software. Therefore, please use PKZIP (version 1.1 or later) or ZOO
(version 2.00 or later) to wrap your software.
** Questions?
E-mail to steve@cc.monash.edu.au
** A Reminder!
Please, PLEASE remember to type "TENEX" or "bin" to your ftp program
*BEFORE* uploading or downloading binary files. You will end up getting
"corrupt files" if you didn't type "tenex" or "bin" before downloading.
If you are using KERMIT to transfer from your Unix host to your PC,
remember to tell kermit "set file type binary" before beginning the
download.
