Why not use a CDROM jukebox and the CDROMS put out by Walnut Creek @ US$25
a throw?

The hardware for n x 600 megs would be a lot cheaper than disk space and
Walnut Creek releases CDROMS that cover a number of the archives that
archie shadows about 4 times a year.

All that you'd need to keep on disk is the newer stuff for each of the
archives (plus pointers to the CDROM stuff), and much of this would be
flushed each quarter. Of course, this would require somebody to write
software to drive it so that us users wouldn't know or care whether the
file we wanted was on the CDROM or on disk. While the CDROM access time is
slower than a hard disk, it can't be slower than the US link.
