<First, apologies for the inappropriate place to post - couldn't think of anywhere else> Before I start, yes I am very aware of the work done by kre et al on BSD. My question stems from an interesting meeting I had yesterday. I had a meeting with <someone> trying to sell me <something> (always a bad way to start a meeting). Anyway, he started by demonstrating his UNIX background. A summary of his spiel is: - He personally knows Bill Joy - In fact, when Bill Joy & Co. wanted to add VM capabilities to System 7, Bill came out to Oz - Bill visited UTS and RMIT - The people at RMIT (including this <someone>) - who had "worked out the VM algorithms but not quite implemented them yet" - told Bill Joy how to add VM to System 7 - Bill Joy then returned to UCB, added VM using the info he got from RMIT, and "became God" - So we can all thank the people at RMIT for BSD UNIX, and Bill Joy can thank RMIT for making him what he is today Can any of you knowledgeable types comment on the accuracy of the above? -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Adrian Booth | | | Adrian Booth Computing Consultants | Ph: (09) 354 4936 | | 7 Glenrowan Pl., Willetton WA 6155 | abcc@DIALix.oz.au |

This is clearly bullshit, as everyone knows Bill Joy never listens to anyone... Seriously, to the best of my knowledge, Bill didn't come to Australia till some time in the early eighties after Sun was formed, and BSD was already up to 4.1C and had at least rudimentary VM features. Any such visit would have had to have been in the late seventies, when wnj was still a poor Uni student. Hardly a definitive answer though. -- Greg Rose Australian Computing and Communications Institute ggr@acci.com.au +61 18 174 842 `Use of the standard phrase "HIJACKED" may be inadvisable' -- CAA

Doesn't sound like it to me. About the only visit of wnj to Australia that I can recall from that time period was to an AUUG conference I organised at Sydney University, and he was with Sun by then. He'd never been to Australia before, as he was delayed by a lack of an Australian visa (or a passport?). Really screwed up my speaker slots. Finally, people who subscribe to the "wnj is god" theory are a bit suspect anyway. If you wanted to put that mantle onto anyone, you could perhaps select some more worthy targets, especially ones whose PR machine is not so virulent. Surely, our own beloved "kre" would befit that status?
