For $550 dollars, I recently got a Teac CDR-56S (SCSI, 24xread,
6xwrite) with a SCSI card (iWill, but an Advansys chipset - works with
Linux if that is an issue) which has been excellent (it came with
ceQuadrat software, which was rather less impressive). This was bought
from a local shop that appears to have prices a little over the odds,
so with a bit of care, you could get a better deal and sneak in under
that $500 dollar budget. The Teac is *much* faster than the generic 32
speed reader already in my PC.
