I'm using an internal NEC CDR 84, connected to the SCSI controller on my Pro
Audio Spectrum 16 sound card. The drive runs fine, and is about as fast as you
can get - <280ms access time, 300kb data transfer rate, 64k cache. And I am
pretty sure it is compatible with the Adaptec too.

It is fast enough for MPC, but like all CD's is still not as fast as I would
like it to be. One thing I haven't tried the drive with is any CD-XA or XA2
drives, or any Kodak Photo CD's. NEC says the drive will run XA, and single
session Photo CD's, but I haven't tried this out yet. If you are interested in
these technologies, make certain you get the compatibility of your drive with
them verified before you buy (although it is also an issue for your controller
and driver software too).

When I bought the drive, it wasn't cheap - about $1050, with a 6-pack of mostly
useless CD's (encycloipedia, map, phone directorys, game - Loom etc). But I
have seen the NEC around for about $699 nowadays.

You might also like to check out some of the new drives from Sony, Pioneer and
Texel. They are second generation MPC drives too, like the NEC.

Happy hunting!
