Hi! I own a HP CD-Burner 8100i IDE, running in a conventional Pentium-PC, a non SCSI-System, but with a ZIP-Drive attached to the parallel port. With the CD-Burner I use CD-Rs for making archives of parts of my harddisk (works fine) and I also use CD-RWs, because I WOULD LIKE to make backups of my complete harddisk each few weeks. Writing, reading and rewriting of CD-RW media via Windows 95-Explorer works really fine and fast. Now the problem is: When I make a backup with SEAGATE Backup Exec, V 2.0 (1996), I choose "File" as backup media, and enter a file name "j:\backup.mtf" (j: is the drive letter of my CD-Burner). The CD-Burner starts with backing up to the CD-RW media, everything works fine. In sum I need 3 CD-RW media for backing up the 2 gig data of my 3 gig harddisk. The problem now is: When I try to restore some data, (e. g. with the backup catalog, or by clicking "device view", which builds up the backup catalog again), I get the error message: - "The backup deice stopped responding. Ref 05-0D-28-03-0000". In the readme-file from backup Exec there is something like: --------------------- 3. Multiple SCSI Device Setups ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are receiving an error indicating that the tape controller is not responding and you have more than one device on your SCSI chain, make sure the Enable Disconnect option in the Adaptec BIOS setup is set to Yes (On). If this option is off, the Windows 95 miniport driver causes a SCSI bus reset when your hard drive or CD-ROM is idle for more than 10 seconds. The reset causes the tape drive's current operation to abort. To set the Enable Disconnect option: 1. Enter your SCSI controllers BIOS. For example, press and hold the CRTL-A keys (for Adaptec controllers) during the computer's boot sequence. 2. Switch ENABLE DISCONNECTION to YES (ON). Sometimes this option displays as Disconnect/Reconnect. Refer to your hardware manual for more information on this option. --------------------- ... but I do not have a SCSI-comtroller in my system, and, I also don't find any option under "my computer - system - device manager" to change any timeout values. My questions now are: - Do I simply have to buy the newest version of seagate backup exec? - Is there any easier (and cheaper) workaround of this problem? Please, if you know this problem, also reply to: mailto:roman@styria.com Thanks, and A Happy New Year in advance! Roman/Austria
