A mate and I compared the speeds of our mobile internet connections just now.

I'm connected to Telstra via my HTC Desire which is acting as a Wifi hotspot.
The mate has a USB modem (with "turbo" on it) that he bought from Officeworks
for $75 recently,

Using Speedtest he got 2.5 mbits download, 1.2 mbits upload and a ping of 55 ms.

I got 0.63 mbits down, 0.19 upload and a ping of 166ms.

This is the only way that we could compare oranges with oranges. Both tests
assumed that we're in South Australia somewhere, (south east of Adelaide
according to the map) and it selected a server north of Adelaide.

We are in Victoria.

Whatever the incorrect assumptions that Speedtest is making it assumed the same
thing for both of our connections.

When I use internet services on my mobile I notice a big difference between
using the Telstra mobile internet 3G service and using them via my home wifi
connection.

Now, I'm looking at getting one of these USB modems. Do any of them offer wifi
hotspot functionality?
