Both my phone (connected as a modem) and the mate's Telstra USB modem are connected to the same cell and are seen by Speedtest as being in the same locale. Short of downloading say, a file from a download site and timing it, it'll do for the comparo. > > Now, I'm looking at getting one of these USB modems. > > Do any of them offer wifi hotspot functionality? > > Not clear what you mean by that last para. > > There are quite a few broadband wireless modems > that allow the PCs and laptops to connect using wifi. Yep, that's what I was saying. Ended up getting the $75 "Turbo" USB modem from Officeworks today. Came with 2 gigs of data, although it wasn't applied to the account when it was registered. Had to call back. Luckily the Asian call centres work late into the night on weekends. S'pose that's something that the Aussie ones may not do. Whatever, the modem's working fine. I was going to get the modem which also acts as a wifi hotspot. It was $99 and came with 3 or 5 gigs of data. Decided that I wouldn't use that feature so I stuck with the cheaper one.
