I am a skydiving video cameraman I would like to hear back from any video camera person who have had their video camera unit FAIL whilst still under warranty and then had the manufacturer try and disown the warranty by claiming that their activity is not considered 'domestic use' of their camera and therefore any damage caused is not covered by the warranty. My new SONY TR880 failed only two months after I bought it. SONY Australia refused to fix it as I had made a modification and I had 'compromised the intellectual copyright' of the unit (attached a remote LED for the record light) and that beacuse I had made other modifications (removed the eyepiece, handstrap and standby switch) that I obviously had used it for a purpose other than 'domestic'. They the claimed that the unit had suffered a severe impact which was directly attributable to me having used it for recording skydiving! They then wanted me to pay $530 ($300 parts, $230 labour) to repair it. Since the unit only cost $1700 it would be lunacy to repair it since any further breakdowns would also not be covered under the warranty. I took the camera back (4 weeks later) and am getting the parts elsewhere and will do the repairs myself. I fully intend to prove that I am more than fully qualified and capable of doing the modifications and that those modifications did, in no way, cause the unit to fail. I intend to build a case against SONY Australia so that I can seek restitution through the legal system for repairs and associated expenses. Any info would be of assistance.
